We’ve made it through the first month of 2014 and what a bitter cold month it has been. Not only here in the Northeast but pretty much across America. Ok maybe not California…

Despite the frigid temperatures and wind chill here in Central New York I’ve managed to run all my miles this month outdoors. Spending long cold days at work, most days averaging twelve to fourteen hours. Somehow deep down inside I’d find the energy to run after work. On my days off I would be out the door at 0600 for five miles and then later that morning hit the pavement, snow or ice for ten more. It didn’t matter, I’d be out running dressed like Han Solo on the Hoth Planet but I’d be running. I despise the treadmill and I am 99.99% sure I would never own one. That 1/10th of a percent is for a future disclaimer.

I don’t mind running in the cold, snow and ice. As a matter of fact I kind of enjoy it. One particular run sticks in my head. It was Sunday January 19th and my parents were here visiting. While everyone in the house were still sound asleep I snuck off to our local Sunday run out in Appalachin, NY. The run began at the Blue Dolphin Diner and followed route 434 west making a right onto Marshland Road. Overnight it had lightly snowed giving the scene that powdery sugar look, complimenting the covering of snow already on the ground. Morning light began the day with a child’s game of “peek a boo” with the clouds, the scene along Marshland Road was evolving into something Norman Rockwell would have envisioned. The crunching of snow under foot completed this Christmas card scene. Definitely one of my favorite runs to date.

Setting aside the cold, snow, ice and wind the month of January has been a little special for me. I hit a milestone in my running, In my short running career this is the first time I’ve run 200 miles in a month. 200.25 miles to be exact, burning 33,636 calories doing it.

Happy 2014 to you all, CHEERS!
