I only began to run in May of 2012. Last time I ran was in high school which was twenty two years ago. I took part in my first 5K race ever during the Binghamton Bridge Run Half Marathon/5K (http://www.binghamtonbridgerun.org). I finished in 35:19 being surpassed by my thirteen year old son who ran a 32:20 in his first ever 5K race. I have to be honest I wasn’t sure I would enjoy this running stuff. However the atmosphere grabbed me and pulled me in like a tractor beam right out of Star Wars. Runners of all skill levels cheering one another on and celebrating as one community. I was hooked!

Immediately the next month I signed up for another 5K road race in my former hometown of Kings Park New York. The Sunset 5K (http://www.ourstatepark.com/sunsetrun2013.php). This one began on top of a hill went down and then followed and old rail bed back up. It was a long gradual climb and only my second race. I finished 26:38 and my son finished 27:48. I was stoked! I shaved over eight minutes from my time in a month.

Approaching the year mark I have come a long way. One race I am excited for is the upcoming Seneca 7 a 77.77 mile relay race around Seneca Lake in New York’s Finger Lakes Region (http://www.seneca7.com). And then there is the famed Utica Boilermaker on July 14th (http://www.boilermaker.com). This will be my first time doing this race. The 15K maxes out at 14,000 runners and sold out in sixty three hours. Quite honestly I am looking forward to the free Saranac beer party afterwards (http://www.saranac.com).

Maybe we will pass one another on the running road of life! Keep on running…..

Joe
